If you're ordering custom packaging, the single most important step is nailing down tolerances upfront. The boundary condition: if the package will be seen by a customer, treat it as brand-critical. If it's purely functional, you have more latitude. Don't say “thick cardstock” – specify 100 lb cover (approximately 270 gsm). And always, always ask for a physical proof on the exact substrate you're using. Your packaging is often the first physical touchpoint a customer has with your brand. Make sure it's on spec.
