Misconception #2: Lower price = lower risk

Turned out the 'cheaper' vendor had inconsistent mold temperature control, leading to variable density in the HDPE. On a 100ml bottle order, the difference was negligible per unit. The Fix: It's Simpler Than You Think

  2. Batch sampling. I always check a random 5% from any lot over 500 units. Not because of paranoia—because I've found that when one bottle is off, 5-10% of the lot tends to have the same issue.
  3. Vendor history check. Before placing a large order for plastic lotion containers, I'd ask the manufacturer about their last three months of defect rates. If they can't or won't provide that data, that's a sign.

Preventing rework is about verifying before committing. The 12-point checklist I created after my third mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. Part of that is a simple check: I always ask the vendor to confirm the HDPE density and the specific spec they're using. Not to be difficult—to stop a problem before it starts.
